Books For Good Causes

We are a not for profit group of book lovers mainly based in South Yorkshire but also North Nott’s, NE Derbyshire and beyond.

If you have modern fiction in good condition please donate to your favourite charity shop if convenient.

Our passion is the love of books and reading. We try to encourage children’s reading and literacy.
We love all books: old, worn, fusty, new and everything in between, fiction or nonfiction and children’s. We strongly believe that reading is knowledge, knowledge is empowerment.

Established 2011

We have been functioning since 2011 and early days much of our fundraising involved a stall at Sheffield Children’s Hospital on behalf of The Sick Children’s Trust there. The need for more books to sell on the stall lead to the organisation of donations and collections through a network of ‘book elves’

This developed beyond our expectations to provide enough stock to sell at other venues and online to support a number of other charities including the Bassetlaw Hospice, Grimm & Co, Staunton Church, several Morrison’s stores, the National Trust book shops at Longshaw and Ilum, Sheffield Mind and the South Yorkshire Transport Museum.

There are currently eight volunteers loosely referred to as Book Elf’s (a name given to us by a little one at the hospital which then stuck). The book elves are mainly retired professionals plus family helpers (much pressed husbands and daughters): Katie in charge of children’s books S26 and Lynn in S14 who organised selling at Fairs & Charity Stalls. Currently Heather & Bob S10 are our very patient Central Sheffield drop off point, Julie S11 is a drop off point and stores in her garage until needed. Catherine in S17 who will collect in her immediate area and store in her garage until needed too, Robin S65 our Rotherham drop off point. Tanice and Captain Jacks are our DN22 Retford drop off points.

Books are donated to any good cause. For example in 2021 we processed over 4000 books. We have topped up a community library and have sorted, sanitised, age graded some ‘as new’ children’s books to be distributed through community projects and food banks.

Who do we work with?

We have good connections with private book dealers who give us free valuations. We also do swaps with Indie bookshops.

Re-Read at Doncaster is a valuable contact who, because we lack storage, take our excess books.

We Need Space

Our success is mainly due to our ability to store large number of books in spare rooms, garages and workshops enabling us time to find an outlet and our passion for reading. Our sorting process is hard work, grubby and very time consuming but also fascinating, rewarding and sometimes emotional.

Do You Just Collect Books?

Books For Good Causes are open to all enquiries for donations of books and bookcases.

Since we often find DVDs & CDs in the book box/bags Katie has found an outlet for them too.

We love a theme

We also keep boxes of themed books, for example gardening, crafts, cooking/baking, wildlife/nature etc. which we donate free to various projects. We freely give books to school and university students, libraries and schools.

How You Can Help

Books For Good Causes are open to all enquiries for donations of books and bookcases.

We are always needing more drop off/sorting points but it’s often a grubby job that uses up space so I don’t suggest it lightly.

We also need help on our stalls and Markets which is nicer work.

What we really need are people who are mobile.
